This is The Appendix Rig holster from Spider Concealment. The particular holster that I purchased is for the Glock 19 and as you can see, this is the type of holster that also allows users to carry an extra magazine.
This is actually my first holster from Spider Concealment and I discovered the company after looking through a bunch of these extra mag holsters. The appealing thing about The Appendix Rig is that it was the cheapest holster of its kind that I could find. Pricing starts at $65 but there are a few optional upgrades. My particular configuration with the carbon fiber front and 1.75” belt clips total $80. That’s relatively cheap but Spider Concealment often offers sales and discounts. The discount that I used took $20 off so I paid $60 shipped. Now, if you go with the standard holster with no upgrades, then that would only cost $45 after discounts for a holster with an extra mag carrier. An absolute steal.
For sure, the price was what convinced me to give this holster a try. How bad can a $60 holster be, right? Well, let me tell you.
First of all, this holster arrived very dirty. It was like when the edges were cut and sanded, the manufacturer didn’t take any time to clean up the Kydex dust. It was just everywhere. I was able to clean that off so no big deal. But when I went to really look at this holster, it was pretty clear that the person who made it didn’t do too good of a job sanding. The corners of this holster show some pretty noticeable saw cut marks, which are generally eliminated by sanding the edges. It’s pretty obvious that they did attempt to sand the edges as in some places you can see that they were too heavy-handed and sanded too much, leaving flat spots. Overall the sanding is pretty inconsistent. Now, after sanding, holster manufacturers generally buff the edges to get a smoother surface and more shine. This just raises the perceived quality of the holster a bit. With the Spider Concealment holster, I’m pretty sure they skipped buffing altogether because this edge is pretty cloudy. No shine and fairly rough. So overall, the finish of this holster is pretty disappointing. The edges don’t look good at all but, again, this is pretty much the cheapest holster of this style that you can find so taking that into account, I guess I can’t really complain about poor craftsmanship.
If we can’t necessarily base our judgment on the form then I guess we have to look at function. How good is this holster in use? First off, the holster came to me with good retention and I didn’t have to adjust anything. The gun clicks into place and can be removed easily. As you can see, the holster also comes with a concealment claw and this is supposed to press against a belt, pushing the gun handle in, and provide better concealability. All of this is great. However, my particular holster has one major flaw. It doesn’t seem to be sized properly. I’ve noticed that after some use, there would be scuff marks along the side of my slide. I don’t see any permanent damage yet but who knows what could happen after hundreds or thousands of use. The slide coating may wear down prematurely but of course, mileage will vary. I’m not saying that this is a problem with all of The Appendix Rigs, but it’s definitely a problem with the holster that I received. Because of this, I would personally say that this holster doesn’t work for me.
So, if form is bad and function is bad, then what good is this holster. The $60 that I paid for this thing may have been really appealing at first but this is definitely a case of you get what you pay for. I can’t tell you what to do with your money but I personally will not be buying any more holsters from Spider Concealment. My holster will be returned and I’m going to try something else.
